The storyline revolves around separated twin brothers, fate, and the consequences of social prejudice.

The film was:

  • Dubbed in Telugu as Dhonga Dhara

  • Remade in Hindi as Yeh To Kamaal Ho Gaya

Overview

Mayandi, a habitual thief, is released from prison and reunites with his wife Sivakolunthu, who has raised their son Senthil without revealing his father’s criminal background. Mayandi gifts his son a toy, which is stolen by another boy. During the chase that follows, the boy dies in an accident.

The case is argued by lawyer Nagarajan, who strongly believes that a thief’s son is destined to become a criminal. Despite Mayandi’s pleas, Nagarajan convinces the court, resulting in Senthil being sentenced to prison.

Consumed by revenge, Mayandi kidnaps one of Nagarajan’s twin sons and secretly raises him as a thief, while the other son grows up in a respectable environment.

Years later, the kidnapped son becomes Rathnam, a thief, while the other twin, Babu, returns from abroad as a lawyer. The narrative unfolds as the twins unknowingly exchange identities, leading to confusion, emotional conflict, and dramatic consequences.

Film Details

Swami Ayyappan is a 1975 Malayalam–Tamil bilingual colour Hindu mythological film directed by P. Subramaniam. The film stars Gemini Ganesan, K. Balaji, AVM Rajan, Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair, SriVidya, Deepa, and Lakshmi in prominent roles. It narrates the divine history of Lord Manikandan (Lord Ayyappa) and the miracles associated with the Sabarimala pilgrimage.

The film was simultaneously shot in Malayalam and Tamil, with both versions released under the same title, Swami Ayyappan.

Overview

Swami Ayyappan explores faith, devotion, and morality through the legendary life of Lord Manikandan. The film opens with a visually striking song sequence depicting devotees trekking through the hills towards the Sabarimala Temple. As pilgrims gather to witness the Makaravilakku, a devotee (Kedamangalam Sadanandan) narrates the sacred legend behind the temple, which unfolds as an extended flashback.

The narrative traces Manikandan’s divine birth, his adoption by the King of Pandalam, his victory over the demoness Mahishi, and his perilous expedition into the forest to obtain tiger’s milk to cure his foster mother. These episodes are presented with effective special effects that were notable for their time.

Master Sekhar delivers a convincing performance as Lord Manikandan, while Gemini Ganesan is dignified as the King of Pandalam and SriVidya shines as the Queen. Strong support comes from P. K. Abraham as the scheming minister, K. Balaji as Vavar, Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair as Manikandan’s Guru, Hari (Harikeshan Thampi) as Narada, AVM Rajan as Lord Shiva, Lakshmi as Mohini, and Deepa as Maalikapurathamma.

After recounting the mythological origins, the film shifts focus to a series of miracles experienced by devotees. These include the frail Sanku Pillai (S. P. Pillai), who is divinely aided in completing his pilgrimage; Major Prabhakaran (Raghavan), a military officer saved from a fatal accident; a young girl (Baby Sumathi) rescued from a poisonous snake while travelling with her father; and the atheist Sankaralingam Mudaliyar (V. K. Ramasamy), who is cured of a chronic stomach ailment through sacred ash from the temple.

Through these intertwined stories, Swami Ayyappan reinforces the power of faith and devotion associated with Lord Ayyappa.
